As a royal agent in the Low Countries, the English merchant Thomas Gresham managed to substantially reduce the debts of the English crown. In 1559, he was knighted and subsequently served as ambassador to the court of Parma. Given the Greshams’ social status and ambitions, it is not surprising that Sir Thomas asked Anthonis Mor, former court painter of the Spanish king, to paint the portraits of him and his wife. They wear costly black garments and fashionable rings, set with cut ruby and diamond.
