Meadow with Cows by the Water, Willem Maris, 1880 - 1904
A flat, endless vista, with cows in the meadow and – in the background – a mill: these have been the principal ingredients of Dutch landscape art since the 17th century. And Willem Maris made painting that Dutch landscape his speciality. Cows play a central role in his oeuvre. Often they are standing by the water, in which their form is reflected. Maris painted in the style of the Hague School of artists who tried to portray nature as realistically as possible. He focused particularly on conveying atmosphere. In this painting, the warmth of the hot summer’s day is almost tangible.
