The Martyrdom of Saint Lucy

Meester van de Kruisafneming van Figdor, c. 1505 - c. 1510

After breaking off her engagement to a Roman consul to become a Christian, Lucy endured many tortures, yet she remained steadfast. She was eventually executed by the sword, as seen here. This panel was part of an altar dedicated to the saint.

Description
Het martelaarschap van de heilige Lucia. De heilige staande op een brandstapel wordt door een beul met een zwaard door de hals gestoken. Andere beulen wakkeren de vlammen aan met blaasbalgen, links kijken gezagsdragers toe. Op de achtergrond scènes uit het leven van de heilige. Linksachter staat Lucia voor een bordeel, rechts een vrijend paartje, daarnaast tracht men Lucia met een span ossen voort te slepen, Lucia krijgt van een priester de laatste sacramenten toebediend, rechts wordt de landvoogd Paschasius onthoofd.
