Self-portrait of the Painter with his Family, Jacob Willemsz Delff i (ca. 1540/45-1601)

Jacob Willemsz. Delff (I), 1594

In his self-portrait, Jacob Willemsz Delff i is painting a portrait of his wife Maria Joachimsdr Nagel, with their three sons standing behind him. At the upper left are Cornelis and Rochus Delff, who both became painters and were probably already assistants in their father’s studio at the time of this self-portrait. Willem, in the left foreground, later became an engraver. The artistic family peers out at us with a penetrating gaze.
