Portrait of Emma Jane Hodges

Charles Howard Hodges, c. 1810

This portrait of Emma Jane Hodges was painted by her father when she was about 20 years old. The striking contrast between the dark cloudy sky and her white collar draws attention to her face. The Hodges family hailed from England; the open-air setting of the portrait exudes an English style. Emma Jane took care of her father and bequeathed this likeness together with his self-portrait to the Rijksmuseum.
