La Sainte Famille, Marken

Xavier Mellery (mentioned on object), c. 1889

Mellery, a painter from Brussels, visited the island of Marken around 1878. At that time there was a lively exchange between Dutch and Belgian artists. On Marken, Mellery made studies of the local population in traditional costume. In the final work, the family in Marken garb are depicted as silhouettes standing out against the golden background. The typically Dutch figures thus resemble a Byzantine icon.
