Two Nocturnal Landscapes

Monogrammist IAR of IAP, 1656

Apart from his or her initials, nothing is known about the artist responsible for these drawings. They are two fantasy landscapes in which to lose oneself. The smoking volcano and the cool stones still seem tangible more than three centuries later. The artist worked from dark to light in order to capture the evening atmosphere. The colour white is reserved for the sparsely shining moonlight and the rippling water.
