Seated Female Nude with Raised Arms

A number of studies of nudes by Johannes Raven made in Rembrandt’s workshop are known. The model who posed for this drawing session can also be recognized in other sketches by him. In the 17th century, posing nude was considered improper for women and those who did so could even be arrested. Accordingly, it was something almost only prostitutes were willing to do.
