Gordon does not record meeting Mahote during any of his travels. But he does remark, on 12 December 1777, that Swellengrebel, on his journey of 1776, had mistaken in thinking that he had visited Mahote when it was in fact his son Hees. It is therefore possible that this drawing was made by Schumacher during Swellengrebel’s journeys.
