Getting started with the collection:
Portrait of the Writer Hagiwara Sakutaro
Onchi Kōshirō, 1949
Onchi captured his friend’s distinctive face in this print, of which he only pulled seven impressions. As the portrait proved very popular, Onchi commissioned his pupil Sekino to print a second run of 50 additional copies. Today, this portrait is considered one of the most important Japanese prints of the 20th century.
