Still-life Composition (Hammer and Saw)
Vilmos Huszár, 1917 - 1918
Huszár’s print Still Life (Hammer and Saw) was added separately to issue number 3 of De Stijl, in January 1918. It is the first and only insert to have been printed in colour. Van Doesburg explained that the work had to be experienced as a visual adaptation of reality and more specifically of the functions of that reality, such as the vertical motion of hammering and the horizontal motion of sawing.
