Collier en Serpent. Voile à la Religieuse

Between 1797 and 1820 the French Journal des Dames et des Modes was the leading magazine in the area of fashion, accessories, and jewellery. The latest trends were illustrated in hand-coloured prints. The veiled lady shown here wears a gold ouroboros (a serpent eating its own tail) necklace. This symbol of eternal life was already incorporated into jewellery by the ancient Egyptians.

Description
Vrouw met om de hals een collier in de vorm van een slang die in zijn eigen staart bijt. Op het hoofd een 'voile à la Religieuse'. Zij draagt een japon met korte mouwen, laag decolleté en sleep. Verdere accessoires: lange handschoenen, platte schoenen met puntige neuzen. In de linkerhand een open boek. De prent maakt deel uit van het modetijdschrift Journal des Dames et des Modes, uitgegeven door Pierre de la Mésangère, Parijs, 1797-1839
