Woman at a Writing Table

attributed to Torii Kiyomasu (I), 1710 - 1720

The colour red was a distinctive feature in early handcoloured Japanese woodcuts. This print pays homage to two famous women from Japanese history. The poem on the table is by Koshikibu Naishi (c. 999-1025). The book held by the depicted woman is The Tale of Genji, written by Murasaki Shikibu (c. 1000), which is recognized as one of the earliest novels in the world.
