Robert Mapplethorpe, 1978
Two important themes are central to portfolios X and Y: sadomasochistic homoeroticism (X) and still lives of flowers (Y). Mapplethorpe himself saw little difference between photographing a flower and a penis. He captured them with the same technical accuracy, whereas until that time, pornography was usually a bit ‘dirty’ and was badly printed.
