This scene is as grim and dark as the life of the drug addicts portrayed here. In 1969 Karales spent time charting life on the street and in the run-down housing blocks in New York’s Lower East Side. Karales started out as the darkroom assistant of the famous master photographer W. Eugene Smith, and like him became a first rate printer of velvety shades of grey and black
