Snow-Covered Dock

Karl Struss, 1911

The small format in which the American Karl Struss printed many of his photographs may be the reason why he has been largely overlooked in the history of photography. However he is, in fact, an important pioneer of the Modernism that emerged in photography in the 1920s. Struss was one of the very first to compose photographs in a ‘cut and paste’ manner, with small separate elements, such as little human figures
