Monogrammist DW (modelmaker), 1817

Model van een opvouwbare bakstafel, erg kromgetrokken. Het lichaam is een kist met vier compartimenten onderin en twee lades boven. Het deksel heeft twee uitklapbare stukken die, ondersteund door uitschuifbare planken, een groot tafelblad vormen. Tegen de lange zijden zijn uitklapbare banken aangebracht, met extra steunen die uit de korte zijden schuiven.

Explanatory note

  • Het model werd in 1817 aan de Marine voorgedragen; men was echter van oordeel dat het te omslachtig, te kwestbaar, te zwaar en te kostbaar was. De bestaande bakstafels naar Engels ontwerp die tussen de klamaaien opgeborgen konden worden, boden vele voordelen boven deze.

Model of a folding mess table. The main body is a chest with four compartments in the bottom and two drawers on top. The cover has two side pieces, which can be folded back on the top. When opened up and supported by planks sliding underneath the top, it becomes a large table top. Against the long sides folding benches are mounted, with extra supports sliding on the short sides. The model is now badly warped.

The model was presented to the Navy in 1817, but the idea was rejected because it was judged too cumbersome, heavy, vulnerable and costly.2HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, Exh. 6/3/1817 N1; J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 585. The existing mess tables of a British design, which were stowed between the carlings of the deckhead, were much preferred.
