Entry

Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. Nine gun ports are indicated by white frames situated on one continuous deck. The sheer rises towards both ends. One wale and a sheer rail are indicated, both are painted black. The bow features an empty beakhead and a black knighthead. The stern has a round tuck and a hollow counter. The model does not have a taffrail or galleries. Below the stern a straight, square-headed rudder is indicated. The hull is S-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. The keel drops slightly towards the stern. The position of three masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.

Obreen lists only one model of the 20-gun sloops of war Lynx and Venus, whereas two have been found (see NG-MC-336-1).1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 336. The 20-gun sloop of war Lynx was built by Pieter Glavimans Jansz (1768-1850) in Rotterdam in 1806. Lynx was a sister ship of Venus, built by Pieter Schuijt Jr (active 1796-1841) in Amsterdam in the same year.2A.J. Vermeulen, De schepen van de Koninklijke Marine en die der gouvernementsmarine 1814-1962, The Hague 1962, p. 18. The two models differ in that the keel of the Venus is flat.

Scale (derived) approx. 1:40.
