Model of a Made Mast

Ronde mast met vierkante top, hommer met oren, rijbed, rijschaal en zijschalen. De mast zelf bestaat uit een achtkantige mastkoning omringd door acht wangen; de masttop is samengesteld uit de wangen. De delen worden door kuipbanden bijeengehouden. Een aantal korte planken om de mast heen vormt van voren een rijbed (ontbreekt) en achter een plat. De zijschalen, uit twee lange delen samengesteld, zijn verlengd als achterstuk van de oren; de oren zelf zijn hieraan met messing banden bevestigd. Een rijschaal is voor tegen de mast aangebracht en loopt onder het rijbed door.

Construction model of a round mast with a square head, hounds with bibbs, furring, rubbing paunch and side fishes.

The mast itself consists of an octagonal spindle and eight side fishes. The head is made of the side fishes. The parts are held together with mast hoops. A number of short planks encircle the mast, forming a furring to the front (missing) and a flat back. The side fishes consist of two long timbers and also form the back of the bibbs; the bibbs are attached to these with brass fittings. A rubbing paunch is set to the front of the mast and continues underneath the furring.

This model represents the improved version of J. Fennenias's design of the mainmast1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 138. of the 74-gun ship of the line Willem de Eerste (Pieter van Zwijndregt Paulusz (1711-1790), Rotterdam, 1782-85, renamed Brutus in 1795 and Braband in 1806, broken up in 1820).2A.J. The ship’s original mainmast, represented by model NG-MC-138-1, was declared unfit in 1819 and replaced in Port Mahon with a mast as represented by this model.3HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, Exh. 17/8/1819 N17, 8/10/1819 N8, 12/10/1819 N27. The main difference between the two is that the spindle is thinner and the side fishes are heavier and compose the head. In 1822, Fennenias’s design was proposed as the new standard for all large vessels of the Dutch Navy.4HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, Exh. 27/5/1822 N7
