General Map of Suriname
Alexander de Lavaux (mentioned on object), 1737 - 1757
Alexander de Lavaux worked as a surveyor in Suriname and took part as a soldier in battles against the Maroons. Maroons were people who had fled from slavery and lived in parallel communities removed from the colonial world. The Society of Suriname asked De Lavaux to make this map in order to gain a clearer overview of the colony and the location of the plantations. The plantation owners are listed on the left. Many of them lived in the Netherlands.
