This Indonesian poster reads ‘Remember! This is our West Irian still occupied by the Netherlands.’ The Dutch retained sovereignty over Irian Barat in the far east of the Indonesian archipelago until 1963, when it was granted to Indonesia through the intervention of the United Nations over the heads of the original Papuan population. Prior to that, Sukarno, Indonesia’s president, had run a fierce anti-Dutch propaganda campaign.
