Explanatory note
'Onderwijs’ was het weidse thema waarmee fotograaf Carel van Hees door het Rijksmuseum op pad werd gestuurd voor Document Nederland. Hij concentreerde zich op Rotterdam, een multiculturele stad met een oplossingsgerichte mentaliteit. Over Rotterdam zegt van Hees: ‘Deze stad is een laboratorium voor heel Nederland, 176 culturen wonen hier samen. De ene keer heb je het gevoel dat het een nieuwe wereld is, vol hoop en belofte. De volgende dag waan je je in de derde wereld. Het is een stad van uitersten, een emancipatiemachine vol energie, openheid, diversiteit en jeugd.’
