Cup and saucer with an abolitionist scene, Etruria Works, c. 1853 - c. 1863

porcelain (material), h 2.5cm × d 12.8cm. More details

Slavery in Dutch colonies was abolished only in 1863. In areas under British rule, this had taken place in 1833. One abolitionist in England was the well-known porcelain manufacturer Josiah Wedgwood. A design by him served as the model for the decoration of this cup and saucer, made at his ceramics factory, Etruria Works. It was probably commissioned by an anti-slavery committee of Dutch women.
