German Soldiers in the De Lairessestraat

Cornelis Pieter Rudolf Holtzapffel, 1944

This photograph of a razzia bleakly evokes the oppressive, continual threat of being arrested on the street. Holtzapffel took it clandestinely from behind a window because photography was prohibited in the final year of the war. The shot became an icon. One month after the Liberation a metre-size print was on view at the exhibition De Ondergedoken Camera (The Underground Camera) and the image was frequently published subsequently.
