Prototype Beugel Chair 3 (Large Beugel Chair)
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, 1927
For this armchair Rietveld experimented with an unusual construction, completely different from that used for his wooden slatted chairs. Two tubular steel frames are joined together by a seat and back made of a single piece of fibreboard. In order to bend the board it was soaked in water first. This version is a prototype, or mock-up. From 1928 onwards Rietveld used it in exhibitions as an example of his chair designs.
