The Annunciation

Tilman Riemenschneider, c. 1485 - c. 1487

Tilman Riemenschneider, one of the most important German sculptors of the late Middle Ages, created a highly original version of The Annunciation here. The angel Gabriel, whose drapery billows out as he flies down, is dynamic and full of vitality, contrasting with the Virgin’s subdued emotion. Petrified and taken completely by surprise, she stares into space while closing her book.

    Maria knielt op een grondje naar links en iets naar de beschouwer gekeerd, voor een lessenaar, waarop een boek ligt; zij staart voor zich uit. De linkerhand laat zij rusten op het dichtgeslagen boek, terwijl zij met de rechter haar mantel om de lessenaar heen en gedeeltelijk over het boek heeft geslagen, vanwaar hij in plooien afhangt. De lessenaar heeft voor en opzij in de plint venstervormige openingen en daarboven een even openstaande deur, waarvan slot, trekring en scharnieren zichtbaar zijn. Maria's haar valt in golvende tressen over rug en schouders. Zij draagt een kleed met mouwen en een hoekige halsuitsnijding, waarboven een tweede kleed tevoorschijn komt. De mantel hangt van haar rechterschouder in een wijde boog over de rug en wordt met de linkeronderarm opgehouden. De mantelzoom vertoont eenzelfde geschilderd driepasmotief als die van de engel.
