Portrait of Eleonora of Aragon, Speriando di Bartolommeo Savelli, c. 1473

marble (rock), h 28.5cm × w 23.5cm × d 2.8cm × w 4240. More details

This young woman carved in profile and in extremely low relief is Eleonora of Aragon. That she faces left suggests that she is unmarried. With its glorifying inscription – ‘divine Eleonora’ – the portrait may have been a gift from Ercole I d’Este, the Duke of Ferrara, whom she married in 1473.
