Decorated Painter's Box

attributed to Anthonie Jansz. van der Croos, 1640 - 1660

Attributed to Anthonie Jansz van Croos (c. 1606 - after 1662). Decorated painter's box, c. 1640. Although the brushes and palette are missing, it is clear from the contents that this is a painter's box. The top is divided into a number of compartments filled with bottles, jars and dishes of pigments. At that time artists made their own paints by mixing pigments with oil. Not all the contents date from the 17th century, but the box itself does. It may have belonged to Anthonie van Croos, to whom the small landscape paintings are attributed.
