Slop bowl

anonymous, c. 1700

When taking tea, frequently different types of tea were tasted. To do so, the teacups were rinsed out in slop bowls. This one is an example of the finest blue-and-white porcelain for sale in the northern Netherlands around 1700. Such a bowl could also be part of a group of decorative porcelain objects displayed on a cabinet.

Description
Klokvormige kom van porselein, beschilderd in onderglazuur blauw. Op de buitenwand een doorlopend landschap met bomen, rotsen, bamboe en paddenstoelen (lingzhi) met in de bomen, op de rotsen en in de lucht verschillende soorten vogels (feng huangs, kraanvogels, etc.). Op de bodem een medaillon met daarin een landschap met een draak die tevoorschijn komt uit de wolken en een driepotige pad. Op de binnenrand een band met spiralen, krulwerk en gelussymbolen (paar vissen). Gemerkt op de onderzijde met het zes-karaktermerk van keizer Chenghua in een dubbele cirkel. Blauw-wit.
