Seal

Robert van Gulik, before 1950

Robert van Gulik embodied the essence of a Chinese literate, a versatile individual with a multifaceted skill set. He garnered renown as a diplomat, sinologist, musician (he played the qin, the Chinese lute), and as the author of the Judge Dee books, a series of historical detective novels. He probably designed this seal himself, using it to stamp the books, paintings, and calligraphy in his collection.
