Container in the form of a crane, anonymous, c. 1700 - c. 1800

lacquer on wood, mother-of-pearl, h 39.5cm × w 59.5cm × d 18.7cm. More details

The crane’s plumage has been meticulously represented by fine slivers of mother-of-pearl inlay. The effect has been enlivened by bits of colour and silver foil beneath the wafer-thin strips. The crane, whose upper wings form the lid of the container, was probably used in a restaurant for serving food at lavish banquets.
