Nyoirin Kannon

anonymous, 1300 - 1400

Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion, also appears as Nyoirin. His name derives from two attributes: the wish-granting jewel (nyoi hoju) and the wheel of law (horin), symbolising Buddhist teaching. Much of the silk has worn and parts of the painting have discoloured and darkened, yet the gold motifs give a sense of the work’s original splendour.
