View of Shinjuku from the Series ‘Hundred Views of Greater Tokyo in the Showa Period’

Koizumi Kishio (mentioned on object), 1935-04

Sosaku-hanga artists often depicted city life. The bird’s eye view here emphasizes the contemporary high-rise buildings in one of the most modern districts of Tokyo at the time. Along the road with trams, cars and pedestrians are electric poles and lampposts. Old Japan seems to be present only in the background, in the form of the temple roofs protruding between the mountains.
