Tile Panel with a Herring Fleet

This tableau consisting of 180 tiles can rival any painting. The Rotterdam tile painter Cornelis Boumeester painted compositions in a range of blue tints. Amid the herring fleet is the Rotterdam, a warship, with the city's coat of arms on the stern, the rearmost part of the boat. Painted tiles with recognizable depictions were extremely popular as wall decoration in the Netherlands.
