Entry

Wooden block model and waterline model of a ship’s stern, the starboard side showing the frigate IJssel, the port side showing the frigate Waal.

The model has a single-storey elliptical stern of one storey with a gallery to starboard. Below the stern a straight rudder with a square rudder head in a triangular helm port is indicated. The sheer rises slightly towards the stern. One wale is indicated. The model is mounted on a base covered with green paper and glass, imitating water.

This model was made according to the proposals of the committee of constructors Pieter Glavimans Jansz (1768-1850), Cornelis Soetermeer (1782-1842) and Pieter Schuijt Juniorsz (1797-1885).1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 99; HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, Exh. 7/7/1831 N94. The latter pair wanted to maintain the quarter galleries, whereas Glavimans wanted to abolish them in order to gain more gun positions. The situation of the privies in particular became a point of discussion. Waal of 60 guns, 54 metres long, was built in Rotterdam by Glavimans from 1828 to 1840. It was renamed Prins van Oranje in 1844 and broken up in 1897. IJssel, 44 guns and 46.21 metres long, was launched in Rotterdam in 1840. It was renamed Prins Frederik der Nederlanden in 1844, converted to floating battery in 1860 and renamed Salamander. The ship was decommissioned in 1893 and broken up in 1903.2A.J.
