Entry

Construction model of a workshop with lathe and drilling apparatus. On the upper floor a gear train is installed. It is driven with an endless rope over the main cogwheel, coming down through the floor and going back up again; the main cogwheel has a flywheel to either side consisting of three arms with weights at the end. At ground level a lathe and a horizontal drilling apparatus are installed. The drilling machine stands in the corner, and is driven by a belt wheel above. On a sledge in a frame a three-jaw chuck is mounted facing the drill; the sledge can be pulled towards the drill. A driving belt passes the movement from the drilling machine on to the lathe: in the lathe an axle of a gun carriage is set with the driving wheel around it. Along the lathe there is a support frame.

Not all the details of this model are understood. Obreen described this model as a workshop for drilling holes in the wheels of gun carriages and for turning the axes.3J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 67. Jochem Pietersz Asmus (1755-1837) himself only describes it as a lathe, and mentions that this invention of his was constructed in full size on the Navy dockyards in Flushing and Amsterdam.4HNA 2.01.29.02 Dept. Marine, Aanhangsel I, inv. no. 20, La. G no. 1.
