Entry
Model of a carriage for a 30-pounder carronade with traversing crow and quoin.
The body consists of two longitudinal beams with fittings and rings, resting on two very thick cross-beams. The longitudinal beams are rounded at the front. On top, they have the lugs with the lug bolt forward, and a slot for the elevating screw at the back. In the middle, two beams are laid across the beams at an oblique angle, between which an asymmetrical quoin slides across. The cross-beams extend beyond the sides of the longitudinal beams for extra stability and stand on friction chocks to reduce the recoil. Two small rollers on a hinge at the back of the transom can be used as a jack, with the traversing crow to lift the carriage off its chocks; it will then also rest on two larger rollers set in front of the forward cross-beam, and will be easy to run out.
This carriage was designed by W. de Fremery, Inspector of Ordnance of the Dutch Navy, in 1854, for small vessels such as the steam schooner Vuurpijl.1HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, Exh. 1/7/1854 N75, 24/10/1854 N146, 16/11/1854 N74.
