This cannon was part of a group of six Sinhalese weapons from the Rijksmuseum’s collection that the Dutch State returned to Sri Lanka in 2023. After conducting joint provenance research, it was concluded that these weapons had been captured by Dutch troops during the siege of the city of Kandy in Sri Lanka in 1765. Hence, there was involuntary loss of possession, prompting the restitution of these objects. The cannon and the other weapons are now on display at the Colombo National Museum.

Description
Bronzen kanon, aan de bovenzijde een gecompliceerde decoratie, deels in reliëf gegoten en daarna bedekt met zilver; de ondergrond van goud ingelegd met zilver, op enkele plaatsen zijn kleine robijnen ingezet. Hoofdvorm Europees. Het kanon draagt de symbolen van de Koning van Kandy: een zon, halve maan en Singalese leeuw. Het houten affuit heeft beschilderingen van dieren en bloemen. Met laadstok en schop.

Explanatory note

Uit de inscriptie is op te maken dat het kanon door Lewuke, de Disawa of Heer van het district van de vier Korles, in 1745 aan de koning Vijaya Rajasingha werd aangeboden. Lewuke speelde een belangrijke rol in de onderhandelingen tussen de Singalezen en de Hollanders. Het kanon werd samen met twee kastanes en een Piha-kaetta in 1765 door de Nederlanders buitgemaakt bij de verovering van het paleis van de koning van Kandy. De gouverneur van Ceylon, Baron L.J. van Eck, bood het kanon aan de Hertog van Brunswijk aan om het vervolgens als geschenk aan Prins Willem V aan te bieden. Op 11 maart 1795 werd het kanon als nationaal reliek naar de vergaderzaal van de representanten gebracht met de vermelding dat het door een zeker Indiase koning aan de Staten Generaal zou zijn geschonken. In 1803 werd het kanon naar de Nationale Konstgalerij overgebracht. In 1807 is het in de catalogus van het Koninklijk Museum beschreven als een kanon dat aan Michiel de Ruyter zou zijn geschonken. [Sint Nicolaas 2008] Gerestitueerd object. Op 28 augustus 2023 tekende demissionair staatssecretaris Uslu voor Cultuur in Sri Lanka de eigendomsoverdracht van dit object. Vanaf die datum was het object in bruikleen van de Democratische Socialistische Republiek Sri Lanka. Op 28 november 2023 vond het transport naar Sri Lanka plaats.
