Medal of honour for Michiel de Ruyter

In 1657 Admiral de Ruyter was awarded a medal of honour by the Admiralty of Amsterdam, the headquarters of the Dutch navy, following his capture of two French privateers off the coast of Corsica. On the front is the lion of Holland, on the back the arms of the Admiralty, a lion behind a fence gripping two anchors. Both medal and chain are made of gold.

    Ovaal gouden medaillon met bijbehorende driedubbele ketting, bestaande uit open, ovale schakels. Aan de ketting een grote draagring, waaraan een kleinere draagring hang. Van hieruit lopen drie kleine kettinkjes, bestaande uit dikke, ronde schakeltjes naar drie aan rand van medaillon bevestigde draagogen. Het medaillon heeft aan de voorzijde het gegraveerde wapen van Holland: gekroonde leeuw met zwaard en pijlenbundel in klauwen binnen cartouche. Keerzijde: het gegraveerde wapen van de Amsterdamse Admiraliteit: leeuw, zittend in omheinde tuin, met twee gekruiste ankers voor zich, tussen twee letters A binnen cartouche.
