Lakschild

anonymous, c. 1700

Decorative shield, made in Japan, late 17th century. This shield was probably commissioned by Johan van Leenen (1643-c.1695), a senior VOC official. It sports a monogram containing his initials. The shield is made of leather (rhinoceros skin) which was exported from Bengal (Northeast India) to Japan where it was lacquered.
