Robert Jasper Grootveld (signed by artist), 1962 - 1964

Robert Jasper Grootveld became known as an anti-smoking magician in the early 1960s. With his street actions and magical happenings, he campaigned against the tobacco and advertising industry, which held Westerners in its clutches as the ‘addicted consumers of tomorrow.’ This collage is an expression of that protest. Counter images and texts have been applied to to a tobacco advertising poster, including the word ‘cancer’.
