View over Harlem

This photograph was published in Life in 1948 as part of Parks’ photo essay Harlem Gang Leader about the gang wars that were then raging. To make this series he intensively shadowed gang leader Leonard ‘Red’ Jackson and his followers. After it was published Life offered Parks a job as a photojournalist. He was the first African-American photographer to work for this prestigious magazine.
