Frederika Sophia Wilhelmina of Pruissia (1751-1820), Equestrian portrait of the Wife of Prince Willem V

Tethart Philip Christian Haag, 1789

Wilhelmina of Prussia on horseback, by T.P.C. Haag, 1789. Forced out by the Patriots who opposed his regime, Stadholder William V found refuge in the east of the country in 1785. He was restored to power in 1787 with the aid of Prussian troops. These had been sent to help, after William's wife, Wilhelmina of Prussia, had been held up by Patriots at Goejanverwellersluis on her way to The Hague. Wilhelmina's brother was the king of Prussia. Court painter Tethart Haag portrayed her on horseback against a background showing The Hague, where the stadholder court returned in 1787. Wilhelmina is wearing the star of the Russian Order of St Anna.
