Folding X-chair

anonymous, c. 1620 - c. 1650

Since antiquity, this type of folding or X-chair has served as a seat of honour for emperors and bishops. Usually, there was only one such chair in a room – reserved for a person of standing. The front legs and posts are decorated with dolphins and crowned Tritons (mermen: half-men, half-fish). The hinge on the front is fitted with a lion’s head.

  • Description

    Vouwstoel van notenhout met leren zitting en rug. De scharnierende voor- en achterstijlen zijn van gelijke contour; de voorste zijn aan de voorkant versierd met snijwerk in verdiept reliëf, bestaande uit rankwerk, dolfijnen, een triton links en een najade rechts. Voor het scharnier is een schijf met leeuwenkop aangebracht. De armleggers lopen naar achteren hoog op in een holle boog en zijn bekroond met schilddragende, naar elkaar toegevende leeuwtjes op Ionische kapitelen en zijn aan de voorste uiteinden versierd met rozetten. Voor- en achterstijlen zijn van onderen naar buiten verbreed tot dragende voeten. Verder zijn zij onderling verbonden door eenvoudig uitgesneden regels. Het leer is gehecht met grote koperen nagels. De achterstijlen zijn aan de achterkant belijmd met modern fineer.
