Dice glass

The Netherlands, c. 1580–1590, glass with diamond-point engraving, silver

Instead of a foot, this glass has a mounted silver sphere containing a dice. The glass was used in a drinking game, in which it had to be emptied the number of times indicated on the dice. The engraving on the bowl was done with a diamondtipped stylus. It is one of the earliest instances of the use of this originally Venetian technique in the Netherlands.
