Chest of Drawers
Jacob Berend Bakema, 1948
This plain chest of drawers served architect Jaap Bakema as the base for his Rotterdam Tower at home. The design dates from the time he worked for the Public Housing Department of the municipality of Rotterdam. The construction and colours of this piece of furniture reference the avant-garde movement De Stijl (1917-1931), which served as a beacon of inspiration for architects in the years of reconstruction following World War II.
