Casket

anonymous, c. 1560 - c. 1600

This casket exudes an air of luxury in every way. Its sides are faced with steel plates ornamented with a pattern of strapwork and foliage scrolls. The plates are set within finely worked gilt bronze mounts. The front opens, revealing nine little drawers of various sizes that were probably meant to hold jewellery or other small precious objects.

    Juwelenkist van naaldhout, bekleed met geëtst staal en verguld koper en belijmd met essen- en esdoornhout en zwart gebeitst hout. Neerklapbare voorzijde, waarachter acht laden rondom een centraal vak, dat door een deur wordt gesloten. De stalen platen en het beslag zijn versierd met moresken en renaissanceornament, zoals rol- en vlechtwerk, kinderfiguren, maskers, dolfijnen, zeepaarden en acanthusbladeren. Op de bovenzijde van de kist is een een verhoogde, opengewerkte rolwerkcartouche met twee putti en een medaillon aangebracht, binnen een geprofileerde, rechthoekige lijst. De binnenzijde van het neerklapbare blad is gegraveerd met een rolwerkcartouche met dieren en vruchten, waarin een verhoogd, opengewerkt medaillon in reliëf is aangebracht met een personificatie van de Geometria. Op de achterzijde van de kist is eveneens een verhoogd, opengewerkt medaillon in reliëf aangebracht. Aan de zijkanten twee hengsels. Op de buitenzijde van de deur van het centrale vak, dat belijmd is met een eenvoudig patroon van verschillende houtsoorten, een geëtste voorstelling van Justitia. De kist heeft een slot met vier schoten en een losse sleutel.
