Goblet with cameos
attributed to Valck, Abraham, 1625 - 1626
This exceptionally lavish cup is decorated with ancient cameos – relief carvings in banded or stratified quartz. The lid is set with images of Classical gods, while those on the goblet have profile portraits of ancient rulers and Roman emperors.

Description
Bokaal met deksel van verguld zilver, gedeeltelijk geëmailleerd en bezet met cameeën. De gedeeltelijk opengewerkte, door vruchtenfestoenen omgeven voet wordt gedragen door drie op schelpen staande draken. Drie knielende naakte mansfiguren vormen de stam en dragen de cuppa, die geheel is overdekt met opgelegde bloemen en putti afgewisseld door cameeën in geëmailleerde lauwerkransen. De cuppa wordt geleed door een lauwerkrans. Het door een opengewerkte rand omgeven deksel is op overeenkomstige wijze versierd en wordt bekroond met een door vier tritonen gedragen koepelvormige sokkel waarop een adelaar met rijksappel.
