Shubun, c. 1500 - c. 1700

Mountain landscape by the water. Japan. 17th century. Ink on paper. Below right is the stamp of the famous painter Shubun (flourished 1414 -1463). However, the painting is a much later, respectful imitation of the master's style. This was not unusual in Chinese and Japanese art, where an artist was not always required to show originality.
