Het clair-obscur in 'Kerstnacht' van Hugo van der Goes: vernieuwer en voorloper van het 17de-eeuwse caravaggisme = Chiaroscuro in 'the Nativity' by Hugo van der Goes : innovator and precursor of the 17th century Caravaggist style

Uittreksel

At the start of the 20th century, various art historians found that the chiaroscuro that is so characteristic of the Italian artist Michelangelo Caravaggio (1571-1610) had a much earlier origin in the Netherlands. It was the German art historian Winkler who showed that it was Hugo van de Goes of Ghent (ca.1430-1482) who laid the basis of this new direction in art. There is still no clear view among art historians to this day as to who can be declared the father of chiaroscuro.
